Retro Peach Pie Recipe from author Adele Downs #dessert

It’s peach season, and peaches might be the best tasting fruit on the planet. I love them, which I why I contributed my original down home Retro Peach Pie recipe to the multi-author dessert cookbook Eat, Love, Write that also offers advice from romance authors on relationships and writing.

Lois Winston, editor of Eat, Love, Write, has featured my original recipe on her book blog. Be prepared to bake and enjoy something delicious!

Mornings By The Bay: Fishing and Crabbing #fishing

Where has the summer gone? Beach season has flown by. In addition to enjoying life on the Delaware coast, I’ve been busy helping my husband remodel the beach house guest bathroom. I’ll post before and after pictures when the room is done. I’ve also been working on a new novel, and have other publishing projects in the works that I can hardly wait to tell you about after the contracts arrive.

Blue claw crabs have been plentiful at the beach this year, and we’ve had good catches since May. Steamed and cleaned right out of the bay is the best way to enjoy them at dinnertime. Fresh corn on the cob from a local farm and a cold beer makes the perfect meal.

If you’d like to try your hand at crabbing–either from a dock using string and bits of chicken, or with handheld traps filled with bait, or by investing in crab pots that stay in the water overnight, you’ll need a fishing and crabbing license, and will have to follow the rules set by your state about keepers, but a seasonal license is well worth the enjoyment your family will have.

Here’s a picture of our overnight crab traps. Each household in our Delaware bay community is allowed a maximum of two. We use a combination of chicken and bunker fish for bait and the crabs love it.

This guy was definitely a keeper! On this particular day, we caught over 50 crabs, and though nearly half of them were too small to keep and had to be returned to the water, our catch yielded enough food for two meals.

Add side dishes for a great summertime feast.

When I’m feeling especially energetic, I make crab cakes or homemade crab bisque, which can be frozen and enjoyed during the winter months when we’re dreaming about warm weather.

It’s been a great summer in Delaware. I’ll be sorry to see the season end.

LIP SERVICE by ADELE DOWNS

Some ghosts won’t take “yes” for an answer.

Jack Harris has loved Legs Anderson since they were kids. Now that he has her in his bed, he has no intention of letting her go. Aunt Ada has other ideas, even from the grave.

GETTING BETWEEN JACK…
Orphaned at a young age, Legs Anderson owes her Aunt Ada everything. The stoic old lady raised her, and Ada’s warnings about men—and the Harris boys in particular—have stuck, even after her death. Of course, that could be because Ada stuck around, too.

…AND HIS LEGS
Patience is not one of Jack Harris’s virtues, and he’s waited too long to start a life with the woman he’s loved since childhood instead of them just knocking boots. Now Ada is interfering from beyond the grave, haunting the old Victorian house she bequeathed to her niece and reinforcing Legs’s fears of commitment. But Jack won’t give up. No matter what trouble may follow, the house will be renovated, Ada will learn to let go, Legs will put her money where her mouth is…and then Jack’ll put his lips everywhere else.

Mornings By The Bay: Living To 100

The woman who sold her beach house to Steve and me is 100 years old. Although her age is remarkable, even more impressive is that she lived alone until the day we made settlement, took daily walks around our bay community, and grew all her own vegetables in her backyard garden. She painted the kitchen and powder room at age 99, did all her own laundry and cooking, mowed her own lawn, and raked her own leaves. At 100, she finally decided to retire to an assisted living community, and my husband and I were lucky enough to cross her path when that decision was made.

We asked to what she attributed her long life and astonishing good health, and her answer was not surprising. She exercised every day, ate only organic foods, and cooked and consumed the vegetables she grew herself. “You can’t trust what’s in the food these days,” she said simply, and we believed her. Little did she know she’d sold her house to other organics foodies. It must be kismet.

Spring is greening the grass and the daffodils have bloomed around our modest beach home. The vegetable garden behind our little house is almost ready for planting. We can hardly wait to see what grows there. Like the home’s previous owner, we intend to grow organic vegetables, take long walks around the bay, and enjoy our days in the sun. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll live to be 100 too.

The Most Delicious Banana Bread You’ll Ever Bake

Amanda’s Homemade Banana Bread (Recipe borrowed from her neighbor, Adele Downs)

Amanda Greer is a master chef and the heroine of my award-winning novella NATURALLY YOURS. In the story, she serves banana bread to the hero (yes, there’s a private joke there), and my favorite recipe for banana bread is included in the back of the book. For those of you who haven’t read NATURALLY YOURS (And I hope you will), I thought you might enjoy trying this delicious recipe for your holiday guests. I guarantee everyone will love it.

naturallyyourspromogardenframed

Homemade Banana Bread:

This is the most delicious, moist banana bread I’ve ever tasted and I hope you love it too. The secret to its wonderful texture is the plain yogurt. The bread is easy to make, rich and satisfying. Organic ingredients without chemicals and preservatives are always best to use. Be sure to follow the mixing method exactly for best results. After the loaf has cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar for a decorative touch.

Ingredients:

1 ¼ cups organic sugar                   1 ½ cups flour

½ cup organic butter, softened       4 tablespoons plain whole yogurt

2 eggs                                             2 ripe organic bananas, mashed

1 teaspoon baking soda                  1 teaspoon organic vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium-sized bowl, cream sugar and softened butter using a hand mixer. Add baking soda to the center of the contents. Place the yogurt on top of the baking soda and hand-stir. Add the two eggs, slightly beaten. Next, add the mashed bananas, flour, and vanilla. Mix all ingredients together well.

Place batter in a standard size non-stick loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Relax and visit Adele Downs at http://adeledowns.com while the bread bakes. Let cool and enjoy for breakfast or dessert.

Happy Thanksgiving from an Organics Foodie

fallpumkinslgoutsidesigned

My husband and I are foodies who love to eat, and we follow an organic diet. Several years ago, we stopped buying processed, packaged foods in favor of fresh, and began cooking all of our own meals using ingredients without hormones, steroids, liquid sugar, high fructose corn syrup, processed salt, trans fats, or chemical preservatives. Take a look at the long list of unpronounceable ingredients on a can of soup or a frozen meal and you’ll see what I mean.

Since we made the switch to organic we’ve never eaten more delicious meals or felt better. We’ve both lost weight (my husband lost more, of course), though we don’t skimp on portions or taste. Yes, we still enjoy the occasional pizza, takeout Chinese food, or basket of hot and tangy Buffalo wings, and my chocolate cravings will never, ever disappear, but 90% of the food we consume is 100% healthy. Eliminating processed foods from our kitchen has been the best thing we’ve ever done for ourselves.

Our free range Thanksgiving Day turkey was raised at one of our favorite local farms, and the stuffing, vegetable side dishes, and desserts will be wholly organic. My husband likes to cook the holiday meals (I know, I’m lucky!), and he bakes the best pies I’ve ever eaten with his signature scratch crust. Even I don’t know his secret recipe. At the end of our traditional holiday meal our family enjoys his pumpkin pie with dollops of real whipped cream. (Pictured is one of my husband’s pumpkin pies, fresh from our oven.)

pumpkinpieyum

Organic eating has changed our lives for the better. This Thanksgiving Day, and every day, I’m grateful to those who grow, raise, supply, and distribute these delicious whole foods to us. I’m thankful for the family I love, and the time we’ll spend together around our holiday table chatting and eating a guilt-free meal.

I’m also thankful for you, my readers and blog subscribers, for your year-round support. I wish you a warm, healthy, happy Thanksgiving.

Best~ Adele

Excerpt:

“They called you a hero in the press.” Her dark lashes lowered and lifted and she smiled at him with admiration shining in her eyes. “They were right, of course. What you did for Jack can never be repaid.”

Mickey winced at the hero reference. “I hate to disappoint you, but I only did what I’m trained to do.”

Amanda made sounds of disagreement low in her throat. “Elena told me at least a hundred and fifty cars passed her on the highway. Every one of them ignored her cries for help. Of all those people, don’t you think one might have been medically trained? Or at least cared enough to respond? No. You stopped. Only you.”

Oh. He hadn’t thought of that.

She pointed a finger at his chest. “There’s a difference between you and other people. There’s no other way to explain what happened on that roadway. Elena is convinced you’re special, and I never doubt her perceptions. That’s another reason why I wanted to meet you.”

Mickey stared into Amanda’s eyes and her pupils dilated. Her lips parted, ever so slightly, as if to welcome a kiss. Her tongue touched the inside of her bottom lip and disappeared. Mickey knew then, she felt it too. Synergy. Chemistry. An attraction so powerful it turned kinetic on contact.

Some called it love at first sight.

Amanda. Even her name was beautiful.

She took a sip of her drink and he watched her mouth and throat work the liquid. When she set down the tumbler, she wiped a droplet from the corner of her mouth with a trimmed, unpolished fingertip. Mickey wished he could have swiped the bead away with his tongue.

Amanda leaned closer and pressed a hand to his wrist. “Trained or not, you were the only stranger on that highway who had a heart.”

Mickey laid his hand over hers and she let him keep it there. Until now, he wasn’t sure he still had a heart. His had been chipped away, piece by piece, like a block of ice since the war. He’d considered it long gone, with his soul. In mere minutes, what was left had thawed in the center, leaving him raw and exposed.

Amanda continued to speak; clearly unaware she’d stripped away another layer. “I love Jack like he’s my own son. He’s a terrific kid. I’ve helped take care of him since the day the Martins and I started this restaurant. When you saved him, you saved us all.” Amanda leaned in and pressed a quick, sweet kiss against Mickey’s jaw.

Their gazes locked when she sat back in her chair. The gravity of her words and her straightforward kiss humbled him into speechlessness. He’d been thanked many times before, but this woman had gotten to him like no one else. He squeezed her hand and then downed the rest of his drink. Amanda took another sip of hers and set the glass on the table before retreating into silence. She turned the tumbler slowly in her hands.

Mickey looked back at her and tapped two fingers against the menu’s leather cover. “Nothing here is what I expected.”

Amanda returned a quiet smile, either assuming he meant food choices, or pretending he had. She tucked her arms beneath her breasts and leaned forward against the edge of the table, lifting perfect white swells above the neckline of her blouse. “Organic means untouched by artificiality. Grown and consumed in its natural state. We eat only healthy foods unspoiled by chemicals, preservatives, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, and genetically modified seeds or cells. Pure.”

Pure. Mickey gazed at the stunning woman by his side. The texture of her skin looked smooth as cream and welcoming to the touch. He longed to run his hands along her thighs, imagining sleek roads leading to heaven at their apex. “I like the sound of that.” The way she looked back at him while he studied her face made him wonder if she’d read his mind.

The one that had gone dirty.

Chocolate and Wine Tasting at Chaddsford Winery

OMG, I had no idea wine tasted great with chocolate! All my life I thought wine was meant for salty foods like cheese and crackers or as a delicious beverage with dinner. Boy, was I missing out! I need a subscription to Wine Spectator.

I took a day off from writing to celebrate the completion of another manuscript (Yay!) and visited the Chaddsford Winery in Chadds Ford, PA. Hubby and I did something completely new and fun with the winery’s “Wine and Chocolate Tasting” event. It’s not every day we give ourselves permission to drink seven kinds of wine, each paired with a specific piece of chocolate to complement the flavors, so on this day we were all in!

chaddsfordwinery6

chaddsfordwinery5

Who knew a light, crisp white wine paired well with dark chocolate butter creams; that sweet and spicy apple wine tasted great with milk chocolate maple creams; or a semi-sweet red needed milk chocolate caramel? Mmmm.

I’d like to know whose job it is to sip wine and nibble chocolate and pair them for wine tasting events. Sign me up for that job, please!

chaddsfordwinery2

My favorite wines were the chilled Proprietors Reserve White (light, crisp, and clean. Perfect for sipping while cooking dinner) and the Spiced Apple, served warm. We bought bottles of  both and will serve the Spiced Apple at our Thanksgiving table. I think it will be the best wine we’ve ever offered our holiday guests.

We enjoyed our afternoon wine tasting event and will definitely visit again.

I love my home state of Pennsylvania. There’s so much to see and do here!

Farmers Have Fun (Yes, Really!)

Farmers work hard. So it’s nice to know when our food is also grown and raised with a sense of humor. Our favorite farmer at Lindenhof Farms wore this smile with his turkey hat at the outdoor market last weekend. I have to say, the hat added another reason to enjoy our visit.

We stocked up on Lindenhof’s fresh made chicken pot pies. The farm grows and raises the vegetables and chicken for the filling and a local woman makes the pie pastry. OMG. The best, ever. And no GMOs, preservatives, hormones or additives. Yummy and healthy!

A Visit to Wellington Square Bookshop, Exton

I found Wellington Square Bookshop in Exton, PA by accident. Turns out, it’s the #1 rated bookshop of its kind in the Philadelphia region, which makes finding it a happy accident. The independent bookstore is beautifully decorated, yet provides that cozy feeling readers like me look for.

My adventure began when my husband and I went to our favorite farmer’s market in the Exton Towne Center to buy our usual meats, pasta, sweets, fruits and vegetables. Author and food blogger Marisa McClellan made an appearance to demonstrate homemade pear and chocolate jam and promote her new book Preserving by the Pint. Marisa was clearly knowledgeable and her recipe tasted delicious. (We gladly enjoyed the samples.) Wellington Square Bookshop hosted the event, so hubby and I visited the store afterward. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who also helped me with my book purchases. If you live in southeastern Pennsylvania, or plan to visit the area, stop by the Towne Center in Exton for its quaint shops and restaurants.

We had a wonderful visit to Highland Orchards in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

I took a break after a busy release week for my new book NATURALLY YOURS and relaxed with my husband at Highland Orchards, a crown jewel of Chester County, Pennsylvania. People travel from around the state to pick their own apples and other fruits or to buy them direct from the Highland market. The staff bakes pies, cakes, breads, and their signature apple cider donuts every day. (I especially like to eat the apple cider donuts while they’re still warm.) They offer a wide variety of homemade jams, preserves, butters, relishes and more. Take a hay ride, visit the children’s zoo, or walk the corn maze. Well worth the stop. I gotta’ say; I love living in my home state.

These photos were taken with my little Fuji FinePix digital camera. Am I making you hungry?
